Officers of the Suffolk Police Department have many opportunities to learn specialty skills in areas that are of interest to them.

The Canine Unit (K-9) is comprised of officers who are assigned to uniform patrol, but who have been trained to utilize and deploy a canine. The dogs are trained to search for hidden narcotics and people.

The Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is a highly trained tactical unit that is deployed to critical incidents such as hostage crises or highly dangerous search warrants. Each officer trains monthly and is deployed as needed to safely and successfully resolve these situations.

The Dive Team is comprised of officers who have an interest in forensic and rescue diving. The purpose of the team is to conduct open water rescue operations in the event of a capsized boat or other water related event. Additionally, divers are used to recover evidence that might have been deposited in the many waterways in our area. The team trains once a month to ensure that they can safely perform this function.

The Marine Patrol is deployed, often with the Dive Team, to address open water rescue occurrences. There are a number of navigable waterways in our area, and often the unit works in conjunction with other agencies such as the Marine and Inland Fisheries and the Coast Guard. The Marine Patrol proactively addresses unsafe boating practices and assists regional events such as Harbor Fest.

The Traffic Unit conducts specialized traffic enforcement and funeral escorts. This unit also utilizes portable speed trailers and motorcycles.
